Bowtie Productions was founded in 2021 with the goal of creating thought-provoking pieces of musical theatre in small scale, immersive productions. In their 4th season, Bowtie continues to illuminate impactful stories and deliver intimate, rarely produced pieces of fan-favourite theatre that speak to the Toronto arts community.

Now heralded as "one of Toronto's most promising companies" (My Entertainment World), their debut production of the musical Fun Home played a sold out run and formed the foundation for a growing community. Their crowd favourite productions of shows like Falsettos, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and tick, tick...BOOM!  played to rave reviews in publications like The Toronto Star and have won Toronto Theatre Critics Awards, Broadway World Awards and garned nominations from the Dora Mavor Moore Awards and Critics Pick Nominations from My Entertainment World.

MANAGING TEAM

Meredith Shedden, Artistic Director

Meredith (she/her) is a Toronto-based director/choreographer with a background in musical theatre performance (HBMTP Sheridan College, 2022).

Selected direction and choreography credits include tick, tick...BOOM!, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Falsettos - director/choreographer, Fun Home - choreographer/associate director (Bowtie Productions), Be More Chill - associate director (Bravo Academy), and The Drowsy Chaperone - director/choreographer (Victoria College Drama Society).

When Meredith is not in the rehearsal room, you can find her calling line dances at Toronto's premier queer line dance event, Spurs Night or playing at home with her cat, Fosse.

Ian Kowalski, Artistic & Executive Producer

Ian (he/him) is a graduate of the Performing Arts program at O'Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute and the Media Production Program at Toronto Metropolitan University. As a lifelong performer and lover of the arts, he is passionate about producing thought-provoking stories that change our perception of what is possible with the theatrical medium.

Favourite acting credits include Peter in Peter Pan (The LOT), Tobias in Sweeney Todd (Ember Island Players), Lumière in Beauty and the Beast (O'Neill CVI) and Will Bloom in Big Fish (TMTC). Behind the scenes, he has directed and produced plays, musicals and several short films. He also works on the production team at Canadian Stage and serves as a jury member for the Dora Mavor Moore Awards in the General Theatre Divison. When not in a theatre (rarely), he can be found rock climbing or travelling.

[This] is the kind of programming you can only pull off with the right talent on board and it seems that Bowtie’s got a great eye for stars. The company should be able to dine out for years on how well they pull it off.

Kelly Bedard, My Entertainment World

Bowtie keeps knocking these out of the park!

Istvan Dugalin

These are all talents to watch.

Glen Sumi

Speaking of stories worth telling, in its third season Bowtie is already a decorated indie company...that makes a strong argument for the importance of the indie theatre spirit in Toronto.

Ilana Lucas, Broadway World

...a gritty, fearless company. I hope there are many more Bowtie productions. I want to see every one of them.
